Click on article source to view video: So now we learn about it, in a Senate hearing: "Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke signaled that the government should buy devalued assets at above-market values to make its proposed $700 billion rescue package most effective in combating the financial crisis. ``Accounting rules require banks to value many assets at something close to a very low fire-sale price rather than the hold-to-maturity price,'' Bernanke said in testimony to the Senate Banking Committee today. ``If the Treasury bids for and then buys assets at a price close to the...

FORT HUACHUCA Soldiers engaged in unmanned aerial vehicle operations can now wear winged badges to show others they are an important part of the Army, a two-star general said. And the general expects Fort Huachuca will see an increase of pilotless plane training with the returns of Marines before the end of this year, as well as the Army starting training on its larger Warrior unmanned aerial vehicle in the next 12 to 18 months. On Thursday, Maj. Gen. Virgil L. Packett II symbolically pinned three versions of the Army Aviation Crewmember Badges on to the uniforms of three...

Poor farmers invoke land law to get their hands on South Africa's richest diamond mine Stephen Bevan in Taaibosch (Filed: 01/10/2006) Deep in the bushveld of South Africa's far north, 20 miles down a dirt track from the nearest road, the dusty township of Taaibosch is an unlikely place to find the owners of one of the country's most valuable pieces of real estate. Yet the residents of its rows of tiny brick huts, baking in the harsh sun, may soon be declared joint proprietors of South Africa's richest diamond mine. John Matlathi, 66, the village's head man, and other...

Four-Legged Protectors Get Care Packages By Tom ClarksonGulf Region DivisionU.S. Army Corps of Engineers BAGHDAD, Aug. 25, 2006 -- When the temperature regularly exceeds 120 degrees, asphalt and concrete streets tend to be a tad toasty on the toes â even through tough combat boots. The norm for all who work outside in Iraq, this time of year, is to be hot, hot and very hot â no one could really blame another for panting from the heat. But imagine if the job also entailed treading on the baking paving, barefoot. ÂThough canine they be, these faithful few serve...

Out in Texas, Libertarian gubernatorial candidate James Werner is having trouble getting into a televised debate A href="http://www.dailytexanonline.com/media/storage/paper410/news/2006/08/02/TopStories/Libertarian.Candidate.Wants.In.On.Debate-2142979.shtml?norewrite200608060649&sourcedomain=www.dailytexanonline.com">(The Daily Texan): Libertarian gubernatorial candidate James Werner is asking public broadcaster KERA to include him in the gubernatorial debate in October. The Texas Debates, coordinated by KERA-North Texas, Univision and The Dallas Morning News, excluded Werner because he didn't meet the established debate criteria as a major candidate. Public broadcaster KERA came up with some excuses for not including Werner in the debate, saying it wasn't because of his party affiliation, but his lack of "newsworthiness": "It really has to do with...

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - An unfinished statue of Barney Fife apparently won't be heading to Don Knotts' hometown after all. Knotts' widow endorses a statue but says the monument should be of her husband, not of the bumbling deputy he made famous on "The Andy Griffith Show." Knotts died in February at age 81. "We consider the dissemination of his image to be a big responsibility that we take very seriously," Francey Knotts and Andy Griffith said in a statement. "No one cares more about Don's image than we do. It would be wonderful to have a statue in Morgantown, W.Va.,...

6/27/2006 - ALI BASE, Iraq (AFPN) -- Firefighters here have received nearly $10,000 in donated equipment that will improve the Airmen's comfort and protection, thanks to the help of several nonprofit organizations, families and friends. Firefighters received the ballistic liner suspension system, an upgrade to the Kevlar helmet. "Most of today's Kevlar helmets were designed to protect soldiers from gunfire and flying debris," said Tech. Sgt. Paul Jacques, 407th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron, who served as the point of contact for the donation. "These upgrades make a good helmet significantly better." Additional benefits include making the helmet more comfortable and...

Army wives get phone death threats from Iraq By Sean Rayment, Defence Correspondent (Filed: 25/06/2006) Wives and family members of soldiers fighting in Iraq have received telephone calls, believed to include death threats, from insurgents, according to military documents seen by The Sunday Telegraph. The "nuisance" calls have been made with increasing frequency over the past few weeks after insurgents managed to obtain home numbers from soldiers' mobile telephones. The growing number of calls has led to an investigation by the Royal Military Police, which has issued a warning to all soldiers in Iraq to take great care when using...

Mars robots to get smart upgrade By Jonathan Amos BBC News science reporter, in Baltimore Dust devils on Mars: Catch them if you can The US space agency's rovers will get a software upgrade to allow them to make "intelligent" decisions in the study of Martian clouds and dust devils. The new algorithms will give the robots' computers the onboard ability to search through their images to find pictures that feature these phenomena. Only the most significant data will then be sent to Earth, maximising the scientific return from the missions. Nasa says its robotic craft will become increasingly autonomous...
